The 1972 Ford Torino: An Often Overlooked Timeless American Muscle Car

Updated: 02/20/2023

Although not as popular as the Mustang, Camaro, Charger and Challenger the Ford Torino is a classic American Muscle Car that has retained a cult following for over five decades.  The hit TV Show Starsky and Hutch featured a 1976 Ford Torino as one of the coolest cop cars of all time.

In 1972, the Ford Torino was available in several trim levels, including the base model, the GT, and the top-of-the-line Cobra. The base model was priced at $2,727, while the GT model was priced at $3,045. The Cobra model, with its powerful engine and sporty features, was priced at $3,735. Despite its relatively high price, the 1972 Ford Torino was a hit with car enthusiasts and quickly became one of the most popular muscle cars of its time. The Torino was known for its distinctive design, which featured a long hood, short deck, and sleek lines that gave it a sporty, aggressive look.

Under the hood, the 1972 Torino was powered by a range of engines, including a standard 302 cubic inch V8 and a high-performance 429 cubic inch V8. The GT model was equipped with a 351 cubic inch V8 engine that produced a solid 300 horsepower. The Cobra model, meanwhile, was powered by a 429 cubic inch V8 engine that produced a massive 370 horsepower.

Today, the 1972 Ford Torino remains a highly sought-after classic car, and its value has only increased over the years. Original models in excellent condition can fetch upwards of $30,000, while models in pristine condition can sell for even more.

The Maple Brothers Auction in Oklahoma City, OK recently sold a beautifully restored example of a 1970 Ford Torino for $27,540. This restoration includes a 351ci Windsor Engine, c6 3-speed automatic transmission, vintage air, Wilwood disc brakes and more. Maybe one day the forest find submitted to Finding Old Cars (lead image) can be restored to match this outstanding example. At least the color is close!

FindingOldCars.com would like to thank the entire staff at Maple Brothers Auctions for their hospitality over the past weekend and more importantly for being such a great asset to the Collector Car hobby. We are looking forward to the next event on November 17th -18th in Dallas, TX.
